Episode 127: Reacting to week one and looking ahead to week two!

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back everybody. We're here with The In The Flat Podcast. I'm a host Tony Kill, Join us always by Justin Jordan.

[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_03]: A great week one. I was a much better in the week zero game. So, I have a lot to talk about this week with some really good week one contest.

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_03]: We had some good matches and lived at the hype. Some of the didn't. Some teams that surprised, some that disappointed.

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So we'll get to all that this week. But first, what's what's kicked get off with a week one look back here. Starting off with our top five games of the week as we previewed.

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'll jump into these and then we'll let's talk about each one. So, start off first with Georgia. Number one Georgia 134 to 3 over number 14 Clemson.

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say to me this is a pretty decent game for a half to two and a half quarters. The Georgia just turned it on and won this.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say Georgia's defense look good. Clemson's defense look good for about a half. But Clemson's office did not look good.

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: The team was going to take a club that is continuing not to have the answers. It only 140 to the other.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_03]: To me, Carson Beck looked okay. I'd expect it more from him at another year starting here with only 270 yards to touchdowns.

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: But it wasn't good Clemson defense. I think that the news that came out of this beforehand was the TN, the starting run it back for Georgia and it being suspended.

[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So they had to go to a true freshman, Nate Fraser who had been doing pretty well 83 yards and a touchdown here.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Overall again, good win for Georgia there that I guess in the neutral site.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Contest there in Atlanta. But what did you guys think of this one? Just to start with you, what do you think of Georgia's win here with Clemson?

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it was a very impressive win by Georgia to win that dominantly. Like you said, it was a defensive battle for the first half, first two and a half quarters or so.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be, I think we're going to learn a lot more about Clemson in the next few weeks than we will about Georgia.

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody expected Georgia to be great. There is, I don't think anybody had Georgia missing the playoffs. People like me had them essentially finishing second to Texas but no one had Georgia as even a flage clip.

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be in the playoffs. They're going to be great. I think over the past three years, three or four years, they've only lost two regular season games both to Nick Sabin.

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So the fact that they won this game doesn't tell me much that I'm the guy here that had Clemson winning the ACC. That pick is not looking very good right now.

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Clemnik, I'd expect it him to take some step forwards and while it's going to be hard to truly gauge where someone is at coming into the season week one against what's probably going to be the best defense in all of college football.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: He did not look good. The entire offense did not look good. They could not pick up like anything.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_00]: If they think if they were in anything beyond third and two, just punt it. So I think Clemson we're going to really see is it just that they're not in the Georgia tier or have they truly gone the way of those late 2000 to early 2010 Texas teams where they had a streak of great quarterback play and then all of a sudden despite being able to recruit these five stars.

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: They're just not panning out. We went from to Sean Watson, Trevor Lawrence to now DJ and K. Clemnik clearly do different groups there two different tiers of quarterback. So we're Clemson really needs to figure that out.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Georgia, what do you think here about this game?

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll keep it short and sweet because Jax just talked a lot. I just think it's another dabbo's not going to that transfer portal.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_02]: It's another way they're not getting better. They're staying the same. We're going to see the same Clemson we saw last year.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_02]: We see this year. Nothing's changing. K didn't jump step up. They got a new offensive coordinator. It didn't look like a paned out enough to be able to put up points, but big win for Georgia.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the second half kind of adjustments they made their next biggest test is against Alabama in the next three weeks. So right now I think Georgia is the best team just they have the best defense.

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_02]: They're offensive enough until someone challenges them and beats them. I still think Georgia is number one and probably right now depending they don't play Texas until later on in the season.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So right now I think Georgia has that mindset that their number one and they're still going to be that number one team.

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's because of the transfer portal. I've listened to everybody talk about this. It's the number one thing was it first take get up. Everybody is lambasting Davos we need for his lack of transfer portal usage. However, whatever was.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: But if you look at their ranked they were ranked like fourth or fifth in composite talent score last year. They're fifth this year. I don't think it's because they don't have they're not using the transfer portal.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_00]: They probably could have gotten some death that prop depth that would have helped them out a bit towards the end. There were clearly the defense was tying up because the offense couldn't get anything done, but I think it's far more about the quarterback situation.

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they need some more skill guys who can just get open. I don't know if you heard what it was like Rodney White was saying about Clemson.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: They was saying that the offense to many white people too many white too many white guys on offense to to be explosive and but I don't know that's it necessarily, but

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_00]: but I don't know if just because look at Colorado look at Florida state. These are teams where they're really relying on the transfer portal and

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: but look at Georgia. Georgia got took a 11 players out of the transfer portal this year and they're still competing. That's the thing you're not your yeah, you guys are the starters that but how many guys do we see that are five stars that go into college football and our dominant

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: first in year how many do we see so if you're getting five stars or four star recruit that Clemson. Yeah, great but you're not

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_00]: to develop that town because I'm not talking about the freshman here it's total composite like how much talent is on the rise.

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, true. Yeah, that's true. But here's thing look at the nerd games Ohio states those guys are not using the transfer portal to fill their tire team up like Colorado and some of those seems

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_03]: are what they're doing is they're taking I had these holes I'm going to fill them with a transfer portal person like for example, they both Ohio State and

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I've got quarterbacks then Ohio State got a safety number one safety they're going to they're really good now because the safety position.

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: No, they're missing why receivers like well, I got the receivers that need to make that a better team. I feel like here if you're looking at Clemson, they have a great team up paper but what they need is the fill in with

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_03]: They don't have a dynamic number one, why receiver with who you are as Clemson, you should be able to go out and get a why receiver that can at least be a top tier number one number two

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I received her to make this offense roll a little more or really if you saw a K-climited last year I would have said I'm not sure about him. I'm going to bring someone in the push him at the quarterback position

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I feel like yeah, you have a lot of young guys on a team that could do something but they have it proven it go out there use five transfers

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_03]: They're the only team outside the military cannabis not using the transfer portal

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why everybody's on

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Dabo Swaney because he's not using it all go out and get five people that can make a team better

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: They granted they didn't get a lot, but Dabo has brought in

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_00]: And brought in a couple guys the year before he brought in a couple guys the year before his first time

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: But zero this year is zero transfer

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Zero people you got to have some holes on your team his issue is he feels like he

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: He recruits better to anybody in the country and he doesn't feel like anybody's better to his players

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He needs to look into mirror and say listen, I made a missed on some of these positions

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I need to fill in with some transfer portal players

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying he's going out there get like 20 transfer portal players

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm thinking if you get five

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_03]: starters that can make this team better or hey get a couple three or four backups that will be good

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Depth pieces that will help you improve

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what he needs to go out and do but he's a stubborn and doesn't want to do it

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's hurting him on it's ultimately yeah, I do that

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I think the big thing is just the quarterback though

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Could they have done one day and then look at either like a rightly Leonard or something to improve that position

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_00]: They could have but at the same time if we're guy has one bad year and then you immediately turn to the

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Transfer you got to think about what kind of signal that sends out but it's not even that you don't you can go to the transfer portal and get

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_02]: a Riley Leonard

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Or get someone and that might light a fire under K club Nick to actually get better

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But there's no one behind him. He's a thing. I'll stay there again some of those top teams

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_04]: They're doing

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Oregon Ohio State in our name all top 10

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Teams, right?

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: They did care about the young players behind them. They want to make they want to make competition the best they could possibly be

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So they're gonna go out on the portal. They're gonna get a top to your player

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Like sure to say if they're gonna push them and the young guys comes up and beats them gets great

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_03]: If they don't then you have someone there

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I never a couple years ago in our game went into the season with Tyler buck as their quarterback

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Because that's what should Brian Kelly left him with

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: They could have went out to the portal but they didn't want to upset the young guys in the quarterback room

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Guess what happened that quarterback room sucked at here

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: That team sucked that year you have to go out and get those players and push your team to be the best the possible

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: You can be you don't want to this upset players. They got to know it's a competitive world

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna bring people in to make even make you better or get make the team better

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's what I just feel like he's not doing that

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're in the we're in the Commonwealth world where if you don't do that you're at a loss and that's what clumps in is right now

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: All right

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Next up our our last game of the week

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Notre Dame over Texas A&M. I will say I was at the game great X atmosphere

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I think Texas A&M they were loud

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I will say I didn't know how loud it would be but my watch was going off nonstop

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I love over 110 decibels

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_03]: It was like in pretty insane that you could hear anything around you

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: But it was a great atmosphere. I felt yeah Notre Dame won this one 20 pre 13

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I felt like coming in everybody said we're gonna lose because of the offense of Lyman and I felt the offensive Lyman

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Did not they did well they didn't allow any sex

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_03]: They at the course a second half of the game. They started pushing back on that defensive line

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's when the runny game started coming alive and I think Notre Dame

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: They did they came in with the game plan

[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_03]: They weren't gonna pass it down to field

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_03]: It was gonna be quick passes all night. That's why you had a rally winner with 150 a.m passing

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: 63 yards rushing

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_03]: It was just about

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Taking care of those offensive players not making mistakes not from turnovers on the upper opposite side counter week

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Only fruit for 100 yards had two interceptions

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_03]: They tried to throw it down field, but I mean you can't throw it on this secondary

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So they just weren't able to successful so hey

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: This cuz I'm there as a fan doesn't mean anything. I will say

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I just felt like you don't throw in I bet you're a morson

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You just don't do that to terrible mistake if you do and then I just felt like the pieces around them the line back

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And crew has been younger but more explosive for Notre Dame

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I do want to you know

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Call out to say an M's defense of line. I felt like that's probably one of the better defensive lines I've ever seen

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_03]: They got after all night and made things held for the running backs and for a rally lender there on the Notre Dame side

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So they gave it all but I think eventually

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Texting that will probably need to make a change at quarterback. They have some they have a young guy on their team

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's more athletic like I can run the ball little more

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that's probably what they need for this team cuz I don't see a

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Dynamic like number one receiver for Texas A and M right now. They have a bunch of two and freeze that

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Or not if you and you match up against a good quarterback roof like this is gonna be really hard for you to get you know get things going

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, what you guys thoughts what you guys saw on TV

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So start you Jordan what would you think of this performance in the orday? What do you think of Texas and him? I

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Started texting I think texting him like you said there's one getting that quarterback. I think that'll help a lot

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: They have a good defense

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_02]: They have a really good defense. They played so well that offensive life in our name

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: We had a lot of work cut out for him the biggest thing for me is Notre Dame just look sloppy. They had 11 penalties that game

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_02]: A lot of just slapping this in a lot of different areas, but I think down to it stretch

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_02]: We got Notre Dame's got a couple easy games to get those offensive linemen into

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_02]: More of a cohesion group

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But they did turn it around at that after that second at the fourth quarter into the fourth quarter

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_02]: They had a better game plan the offensive line like you said started pushing back. I just think

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_02]: They texted and I'm starting getting tired

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Started another day and took advantage of that offensive line pushback a lot of rushing yards

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I think the biggest thing with Notre Dame is Riley Leonard is he just can't tackle him

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_02]: He escapes he can extend plays

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I was listening to something they were talking about I even pun it anymore

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_02]: If Riley Leonard could extend a play to get that first down if you're fourth and two no matter where you are in the field

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: He's gonna get to that first time majority unless the replay says he did across the line when he's like a foot past the line, but and then you look at

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But like I think Notre Dame offensively it was hard to play against Texas A&M throw the ball. It's loud

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a lot some of the penalties. It's just loud

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_02]: That's like you said Tony. It's a loud stadium. It's hard to play even if Texas A&M was

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: If Notre Dame was unranked to Texas A&M was unranked to stadium would be as loud as that was

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_02]: But I think Notre Dame took a huge step this this year. Riley Leonard is a good part part to that and I think

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: There was a big win especially I thought it was gonna be a little closer

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_02]: But Notre Dame's defense really stepped up and we could have saw a third pick at the end of the game

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: It was right there, but huge win Texas A&M is like I said one one

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Part away in that quarterback is the huge thing that they know and I would say there were I saw a lot of fans from Texas A&M

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Bashing Mike Elco already his first game is his head coach of

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Texas A&M. I feel like he's gonna have that defense playing like this every week

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Gotta give him a little bit of time to get the right pieces. He's inheriting

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Whatever was left from Jim O'Fescher

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he needs to get a right quarterback to write wide receiver pieces and his right his star running back is out for the season too

[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think you got a little slack there, so I would have be as hard on him and I think some people just don't like the fact that they lost in their game

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And Texas A&M and that place that they like to lose but that's the different stories

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Just what do you think of the game?

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was I wasn't blown away by

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Either team, but I think this is a very big win for Notre Dame

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I think this is gonna be potentially like your most important win that you're able to get over this hump

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Because of the youth that had to start on the offensive line going up against what might be one of the best defensive lines and all of college football

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Florida State I think is your next tough game and

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_00]: They at least as of right now from what we've seen from them

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_00]: You should win that and then yeah, and the season with USC and I think they were more impressive than we really thought

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: But I think as a team Notre Dame is a better team than LSU

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: So I think the fact that you guys went in got the win wasn't the prettiest

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_00]: But you did what you needed to do tough football

[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I think you guys have shown that you can compete with just about anybody

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: You have the talent is the city finally get it done time will tell but I think you definitely

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Have what it take to go undefeated this year and get that fifth seed

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, sounds good. So what's we want to the next few big games here?

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Miami beat Florida first of my many

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_03]: incorrect predictions coming up here so

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Miami beat Florida 41 17 and I have this

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Flabbergass in it for it looked as bad as they looked but can't more did not look bad he had on 385 yards free touchdowns

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Think a touchdown rushing for every Russian yards look really good here

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Figrammerds did not anyone he yards interception I think you said he got a maybe a cushion in this game as well

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_03]: right Jordan

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So again, I'm not surprised I guess I might be one. I guess I'm surprised that they beat them this bat in this swamp

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I like I just wasn't

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I just wasn't expecting the behave. I know Jess

[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I think you called this one a little bit

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So we'll let you talk here about this win and how you think Miami showed in this game

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was really impressed. I think that while

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Teams like Florida state and Florida I think they actually if you again if you look at the talent composite rankings

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_00]: They're above Miami but the difference was the quarterback damn wordplate fantastic

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I had that one

[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Was our interception decision? I think it was in the first quarter

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Where he really got fancy with the little guy he was he rolled out he tried a side arm it and he can't do it that side arm pass

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_02]: After that first interception it seemed to be working. It was across his body. That's what he do it across his body

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_00]: It was there there were some these plenty talented and I was very impressed that after you through that interception

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Seems like his heart beat never went above was a 50 60 beats for a minute whatever

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_00]: The normal

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Hurry he was not shaken at all playing in the swamp

[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I think right now despite me having picked Clemson to when the ACC

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Miami just looks like the best team the ACC was looked really disappointing in week one and I guess we zero

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_00]: But Miami looks like they could win this conference

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_00]: handedly like it

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I was saying about Clemson if they can figure out the quarterback

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_00]: They've got the talent Miami seems like they have the quarterback and they have the talent

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if they're gonna be able to stack up with a Georgia or in Ohio state, but they like

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Now before we get too far ahead of here in Miami

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: They were playing Florida team that looks like they gave up already on this season

[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_03]: You feel like well they look different when they go against a clubs in or or Florida state or even like a door to tag

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_03]: It's easy to terrible, but I think for the most part I agree

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_03]: But do we feel like if they go up to so many of the little better defense that they'll have the same type of performance?

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Do we feel like it's performance was a cause of Florida because of Miami?

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess what I'm asking I think it was both

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about you Jordan, but I think it was both

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: that

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Miami has the talent and now they have the quarterback to go with the talent

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_00]: But I'm not sure I'm still not 100% sure if it was confirmed that the image was real

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_00]: But you had of there was a simply because I was going around after the game of a Florida player in the locker room after the game

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_00]: He was showing the bird to his snapchat and then it was captioned after this team

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I totally missed that. I don't know if that's real or not so yeah, that was it was going around

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't a good look, but I think it was one of those things where

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I think Miami is going I don't think Miami is going to be as good as they looked

[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_00]: But I don't think if they would be looking that much worse against state better defense. I don't know about you Jordan

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Now I think Miami has

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_02]: This was the first real test forum. They have Florida state

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They don't play clumps in this year

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_02]: They have a home game against Florida state

[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I think
