Tony Kihl: Welcome back everybody to the latest episode in the flat podcast. I'm your host Tony Kihl join as always by Jordan and Jess All right So a lot of interesting games a week to a lot of games closer than you think for some fans pretty bad results happen. So we're gonna talk this week about some of those top games from last week buy or sell our playoff contenders Who still has a chance to make the playoffs, who doesn't.
And then we'll preview some of the games for next week, which are not great. But we'll get into them. And then we'll tell you about what we think is going to happen. But first, I guess this is now an annual tradition let's talk about Notre Dame and how terrible they are, because they lost to Northern Illinois 16 14.
I, I decided to go ahead and go to that game this weekend, and it was not an enjoyable contest. Fans were booing Notre Dame at halftime. Everything that could go wrong in this game went wrong. Defense was just allowing runs. Broken plays. Running back froze. Blocked field goals. Raleigh Leonard can't throw a forward pass.
It was it's pretty bad And I you know just wanted to say here that we obviously are fans of Notre Dame at least two thirds of us Sorry, Jess We're not going to talk about them anymore until they're relevant and that's going to be USC if they're 11 and 10 and want to Go into USC then we'll talk about them until then.
We're not gonna bore you guys with any Notre Dame talk. There's no point They're not a relevant team anymore this season But what I do think they need to do my last comment on Notre Dame here is I think it's time to start one of the young quarterbacks, start developing one of your own because I don't think Raleigh Leonard has it.
Maybe he'll surprise us next few games, but he just seems really lost. He seems one of those guys that are, I think, like a DJU that does really well on seven. You saw him at the Manning competition over, over the summer. He won the accuracy challenge and that's why I think, Me and SplendorName fans got their hopes up because the one thing we had worries about was his accuracy and he's out here winning Accuracy challenges, but again, that's not wearing That's not with somebody running down on you and you have to make a split second decision And I think he's really struggling with that.
And so my hope for Notre Dame is that If Riley Leonard struggles again at Purdue, that they pull the trigger quick and get someone else in. I don't think Steven Gelli, his backup, is the answer. He's a really good game manager. Maybe he can win the rest of these games, because they're not a hard schedule.
But with the offensive line the way it is, you need a mobile quarterback. That's why I think you should go to Kenny Michie or CJ Carr. Or this season may be lost, and Marcus Freeman's career at Notre Dame may be lost. There's a lot of people already calling for his firing, Riley Leonard's benching.
Just not a good day, not a good weekend to be a Notre Dame fan, Jordan, I'll let you close us up here before we move on to Week 2 Top Games.
Jordan Schultz: oh, I got no, you said it all, man. It was a disaster all around, defense, offense, special teams. They already blocked one field goal, and we went for it again at, what is it, 62 yards?
Tony Kihl: Yeah, and the play calling at the end was like, all we had to do was like, had to go like 30, 40 yards to get a field goal with 40 seconds ago, 34 seconds ago. And some of the play calls were terrible, and it was like, you just decided you were going to take a 62 yard field goal with, That has to be a lower kick, and it already got blocked once, that's the play call you went to, I don't know, I don't understand.
Jordan Schultz: And Riley Leonard not being accurate they could've, that guy the second interception, he underthrew the guy that was wide open. I could've
Tony Kihl: threw a ball better than that. He just had to throw
Jordan Schultz: the ball farther, and the game would be different, it's just, Riley Leonard is I just threw a duck,
Tony Kihl: man, I just,
Jordan Schultz: Not accurate enough.
Sneaky, athletic, put up the numbers. He, just don't laugh. We know.
Jess Sabin: We all know what everybody means when they say sneaky athletic.
Jordan Schultz: He's athletic, but not with his arm. He can't throw the ball. Oh
Tony Kihl: man. Yeah, no, he's definitely not athletic with the arm.
Jordan Schultz: And I definitely jumped on that college football playoff or college football game and put up 5, 000 points against NIU with Benedict.
Yeah. Yeah, just, I don't know what to say, man. Wait,
Tony Kihl: I will say congratulations to NIU, man. They had a really good game plan that they're really confused in their name all game long and their players played hard So I definitely credit them. They're in the top 25 now, so We hope we see you guys in the playoff Yeah, I doubt we will.
But we'll see what happens. But yeah, that's Notre Dame, and we won't talk about you guys anymore.
Jordan Schultz: Also, thanks for taking our 1. 3 million dollars to come play us.
Tony Kihl: Yes, exactly. That's the gift that keeps on giving, alright, let's just get off Notre Dame. I want some more happier thoughts.
Maybe, if you're a Michigan fan, this will be a happier thought. But Texas beat Michigan 31 to 12. Yeah. 246 yards, three touchdowns. I think overall Texas looked really good in Michigan, Davis Warren, their quarterback for 204 yards, had a touchdown and two interceptions.
His touchdown was when the game was already out of reach, so I don't think you can take much from that. And I just, I think for Michigan it all comes down, I really thought their offensive line, they recruit well, the offensive line position. I really thought that their offensive line would be better than what it is, and it's not.
It's not allowing them, it's not opening up running holes. Learning lanes for the running backs is not protecting the quarterback enough. It's just, they just felt like outmatched against Texas and Texas really was really firing on all cylinders for both offensive defense. Good performance here by Texas.
Jess, this is a team you've been on all off season. So what's your thoughts here in Texas?
Jess Sabin: Yeah, honestly, the game wasn't even as close as the score would make it look like. At one point, I think it was like midway through the second quarter was Texas had run like 45 plays, or 48 plays, something like that.
And Michigan had run like 15. It, the game was never close. And in the second half, Texas was not like taking their foot off the gas necessarily, but the play calling got a lot more conservative. They were just grinding out the clock. They were specifically wearing out Michigan's defensive line, which was their strength, because Texas knew they had the size to match up with them.
When the two defensive tackles Grant and Burton, I believe, were out, that's when they would attack the middle. When they were in, they just ran it to the outside, and they, Texas was in complete control the entire time. Quinn Ewers was very efficient, 24 of 36, 246 yards, three touchdowns. So we didn't have some, absolute insane stat line, but they, he knew they didn't need to as long as they, just essentially kept Michigan out of reach.
Just like that what is it in the cartoon where the guy, like one of the smaller person is the kid typically is like running at the adult and the adult just puts their hand on the head and the kid starts failing. That's essentially what Texas did to Michigan. But, Texas was just the better team.
I've said, I said this and I know Jordan, you and Tony both disagreed, but I have it as essentially Georgia, Texas, small gap, Ohio state as my top three teams right now, I think out of those three, I think Texas has the best quarterback, Ohio state has the most overall just raw talent. And Georgia's the most balanced of the three, so we're going to see how that all plays out.
But I think that right now, Georgia, Texas, small gap, Ohio State.
Tony Kihl: Jordan, any closer thoughts here on Texas over Michigan?
Jordan Schultz: No, I just think that Michigan, just talked all about Texas. I think Michigan needed that quarterback. They didn't have him. Like you said, Tony, that offensive line doesn't let Edwards do anything.
He had eight carries for 41 yards. He typed it. Michigan just looked lost on both sides. Texas just, slashed them all game with the, the running and the short passes. They just, like Jeff said, the game was a lot, more one sided than the score showed. Davis Warren is definitely not that guy.
He, he, you watch the game, he overthrew wide open receivers that, when the game was close. The game was. They needed a touchdown and wide open overthrew him. But he didn't have a lot of time in the pocket. I think Michigan lost too much and they didn't really recuperate anywhere enough to be back to where they are.
And I think Texas just exploited everything that Michigan had that was good and just made it so that they didn't have to deal with it. Jess said, They ran it different sides from where their best tackle, or best defensive lineman was. Even when he was outside, they, Michigan started putting their best defensive tackle on the end.
They had a great game plan, and Texas used that game plan and ran it flawlessly. And that's why Texas is, won this game outright all the way through.
Tony Kihl: Good game plan about Texas. I think Michigan has a lot to work on. They need, to me, I would, they're in the same position in their name.
I, I might be time to start a young quarterback, freshman quarterback and let's see what you got. Cause I don't think the current quarterbacks you have that will have much, you maybe want to mix some of the offensive linemen up too. It's tough out there right now for almost rebuilding teams. All right.
Let's talk about Iowa State and Iowa. It feels like whenever I pick Iowa State to win and have a good season, I, they. They do terrible. Whenever I pick against them, they do well. Iowa State fans, you better just hope I keep picking against them. But Iowa State won this game at a 54 yard field goal with 6 seconds left.
They give them a 20 19 victory over the number 21, Iowa. This is only the third win in the last 11 games over the Hawkeyes. Their quarterback, we talked a little bit about him last time at Rocco, benched, I think had 272 yards, two touchdowns, interception. You compare that to Cade McNamara.
I guess that offense isn't quite back for Iowa, or there yet for Iowa. He only had 99 yards, passing, two interceptions. But they actually led this game, 19 7 with 447 left. And Cade McInerney missed a two point conversion. And then it was downhill from there. They just went on a streak for Iowa State and they won this game.
Jordan, any thoughts on this one? Look, I just think most of the teams we're talking about right now. We talked about Notre Dame, talked about Michigan. Quarterback, Cade definitely did not play up to par what we saw the week prior. They would have won this game if They okayed through more than 99 yards and had not two interceptions.
Jordan Schultz: They had an outstanding run Caleb Johnson had 25 carries for 187 yards and two touchdowns. It just, their defense didn't look as good as we've seen them look in previous years. And the crazy part is when you, Iowa State comes into Iowa and beats you by a game you should have won. I think it's, I think.
It's another team, I think it's time. You got nothing else to lose. It's time to put in that young quarterback you have. I don't even know what Iowa's going to do. I don't even know if Iowa has
Tony Kihl: a young quarterback, do they?
Jordan Schultz: I don't think so. Yeah, they got some freshmen on the roster. But yeah, I think just that quarterback.
It all comes down to Cade McNamara. He didn't take a step forward after last week. He didn't take a step forward really after last season. And. It really showed and it really hurt Iowa and they couldn't just keep this game up forward. Yeah, big win for Iowa State. Tony, this is your team.
Tony Kihl: I guess. Yeah, one way or the other. I'm stuck with them. I would say any closing thoughts on this one before we move to the next one, Jess?
Jess Sabin: No, other than Iowa does in fact have a young quarterback on the roster, Marco Lanes. He was a three star pro style coming out a couple A year or so ago, being that he's a redshirt freshman.
Either that or this is his redshirt year. Don't have too much information on him. But yeah, no, it was a pretty stark contrast from week one to week two for how the offense performed. I don't necessarily agree on just immediately bailing on Cade, but you have, the whole kind of idea of this Iowa team this year was that they finally had an offense to pair with that defense.
And if they had just gotten that two point conversion, then that would have changed everything for them. Cause then they, I would say, couldn't have won it on a field goal. They would have had to score a touchdown being that they would have been down 21 to 17, instead of 19 to 17, but Iowa. For the sake of the Iowa fans, I just hope this doesn't end up being just another same thing, year after year, where you've got this great defense, but the offense can't do anything, and, you just, I just feel bad for the Iowa fans.
I really do.
Tony Kihl: Definitely. Alright. Let's move on to an interesting game we have. We all have some contrived thoughts on Tennessee over and North Carolina State. Tennessee had been winning this game against North Carolina State 51 to 10. Nico, the quarterback for Tennessee, had 276 yards, three touchdowns.
They had an interception, 85 yard interception return for a score. And that defense really just seemed to shut down. Grayson McCall, he only had 104 yards passing. He, and they forced three turnovers off of North Carolina State. So it's overall, this is a dominating performance here by both the defense and then the office did enough to keep the ball rolling.
Jess, what do you hear? What do you think about this Tennessee team? I was I the only one that picked Tennessee, Tony? I know Jordan. I think so. Yeah. I don't recall. I'll take that as a yes. Then look Niko Lama, Leiva, just Niko. Niko. I told you there was, there's a lot of talk about him.
Jess Sabin: They had a bit of a slow start there. I think it was actually pretty close early on but I knew Tennessee, they've got pieces on defense. They've got a good offense and I think Niko is going to be that difference maker for them. And I'll say this, like that 2026 quarterback draft class looks like he could be really good.
Especially if Arch is what I think he is. I know you two are a little. Oh, we
Jordan Schultz: already skipped Texas.
Jess Sabin: Why don't we talk about it? No, I'm just saying, because Arch was, I believe the only guy in Nico's class that was ranked above him. So Nico, like he was the he had these expectations and I think he's he's a big guy too.
He's got a cannon for an arm.
Tony Kihl: I never, he's the one that also, that made They paid eight million dollars to sign.
Jess Sabin: There's a reason that he was as coveted as he was. And we are seeing that. I think he's going to be a special talent. Now will Tennessee be able to do this when they play Georgia?
Probably not. I don't see Tennessee being a true playoff championship contender this year. I just don't, I, I don't think on defense, James Pierce is enough essentially by himself. But Tennessee showed they were a more dominant team and it went the way that I thought it was. Tennessee, I think, is a class above a team like NC State.
I still think NC State's good. They're fine. But I think Tennessee's going to be in that tier of teams that is going to be fringe playoff. But even if they make the playoffs, maybe they win a playoff game, but there's no way I see them competing with the likes of Georgia, Texas, or Ohio State, or anything.
Tony Kihl: Alright, Jordan, any closing thoughts on this one?
Jordan Schultz: Just surprising how Tennessee actually, their defense played really well. The game should have been 51 3 but Niko threw an interception. I think I think Tennessee is good offensively and defensively this year. Three turnovers this game on defense, so huge.
I think Niko, with him being a freshman, it showed. He threw two interceptions this game threw a pick six. Go into a hostile environment like NC State, he's a freshman. He's young. It's gonna grow I like you said just I don't think they're a fringe playoff team just because they play at oklahoma and at georgia, so those games are hostile environments.
I think those two games could be a huge test More of a test than NC State for Nico, and I think going into the next couple weeks, they have Kent State next week, which is not a lot, and then the week after, they have Oklahoma at Oklahoma, so I think that's going to be the biggest test. They have Alabama coming up too.
Yeah. Yeah, they have Oklahoma at Arkansas the week after. Or that's tough after a by and then they play 10 Florida at home and then they play Alabama at home. Yeah. So I think it's a tough schedule. I dunno though the away games for Nico are is gonna be a question mark for me. Just 'cause he's freshman is shown in this game.
It gets hard to play anywhere away, especially when it's a school that comes out and. I think they're going to be,
Jess Sabin: yeah, I think they're going to be better than Oklahoma, but that being at Oklahoma, like you're saying, Jordan, I think that's going to be a test that could be what sways that matchup.
Tony Kihl: Yeah. It's a place to play. Big win for Tennessee.
Tough place to play. All right. Let's move on to Nebraska, Colorado. I think we were all on the mark here for Nebraska being Colorado. They beat them pretty bad. It was 2010, but the. The score was not that close if you watch the game. They just, the Nebraska defense has dominated Colorado. Dylan Raiola did what he needed to do.
185 yards and a touchdown. I think Sheriff Sanders was sacked five times. They really pressured him throughout the game. What I didn't like for your, Sheriff Sanders had a bad performance and afterwards he's, Criticizing his offensive line. He's criticizing his young plate, receiver that maybe missed the missed a move And he's just blaming other people then when they ask about Dylan Raiola's performance.
He said yeah He had somebody to protect him unlike my offensive line, stuff like that It's just that's not what a leader does at this point. He's a senior, right? He's wow Why would you drop this guy who's just gonna throw people under the bus? It's just Twitter's coming or X He's been coming out about what's going on in Colorado and how they changed the culture in a bad way there.
And I'm not surprised that they lost this game But anybody have any thoughts here in Nebraska just beating up on Colorado? Nebraska's
Jordan Schultz: defense held a Colorado scoring offense to 10 points, which is big and I think Dylan Raiola is Slowly getting more comfortable and comfortable every week. I know it's week two, but it looks good The biggest thing for me is Colorado Has one guy, they, they have, they're one dimensional.
They can't run the ball. They pass the ball, but it's passing the ball to Travis Hunter every play almost. Out of the 23 receptions in this game, 10 of 'em are Travis hunters. Double team, him, Colorado can't, I don't know what Colorado can do. They can't run the ball. Their offensive line can't block.
And the culture there, I don't know what it is. I just, I'm, Nebraska, huge win. Nebraska's on the up. Dylan Raiola looks good and continues to impress. Georgia fans are still salty that they lost them based on the comments on our YouTube videos from years ago,
Jess Sabin: yes. I had I heard someone describe the Colorado football culture and they said, Deion Sanders is not the head coach of the Colorado football program.
He's a, he's the personal coach for his sons and Travis Hunter, and that's it. Which is why he's not doing much in, along the recruiting lines, he's not establishing pipelines, he's not working with their donors all that much he's just there for his sons and Travis Hunter. And there's a very real possibility, there's speculation in Colorado it sounds that he's not gonna stay after this year once his sons leave.
He'd just broken his program even more than it was. Yeah, this is, this was purely just him just using Colorado to put his sons on the national stage, to get them drafted, and then leave. I feel bad for all the Colorado fans who were thinking they were gonna actually have this program really turned around because they have the same issues essentially as last year.
The defense isn't any good. They can't pass protect. The entire offense is Shador running around trying to make a play to just throw it to Travis Hunter. They're gonna put up some splash plays. Hunter's gonna get his numbers. Shador, to his credit, doesn't seem to turn the ball over all that much. He's efficient, but he doesn't have a big arm.
He's clearly got some either no filter or just straight up character issues in terms of being a draft prospect with the way he throws people under the bus and all the stuff that he's posted on x slash twitter or whatever you're gonna call it. And it, I just think that the program is they're a mess.
They're just a mess and I don't really see it getting much better this year. They weren't able to win. I don't know if I'm going to pick them over Colorado State. I probably will just off of this year talent, but like the fact that I even have to question that it's it blows my mind what's happened with this program and all of the attention and all of the media and here we are still talking about it.
Tony Kihl: Honestly, I agree. I feel bad for Colorado fans. If he really cared, he would have been really kidding the pavement, getting the recruits in. But we, I think we talked about it on a, Earlier podcast where he's not even doing visits at home. They, he asked everybody to come to him because he doesn't want to go to your house.
It's just who does that? And makes it in college football. But we'll just see what happens going forward. I agree. I think this is the last season for him. And if
Jess Sabin: it wasn't beneath Nick Saban, it shouldn't be beneath Deion Sanders. I know Deion is Deion, but you're a coach now. You're not a player.
Tony Kihl: And he makes it say Nobody wants you to come to their house, it's not what you, but people actually do want to come to your house. They want you to sit down in their environment, be comfortable, and you talk to them about how they're going to use their son. And if you're not doing that, why do they want to send anybody there?
Jordan Schultz: These parents don't want, the parents want their kid to feel comfortable. They want you to be able to, show us why he's going to be comfortable and grow there. And if you're not coming to their house, what is it? You're It's not about your, my son, it's about you.
Tony Kihl: Yep, I agree.
Alright, moving on to I think one of the better games of the weekend. Oregon beat Boise State 37 34. This great Oregon team you guys kept telling me about in the offseason. At least I got one thing right. I didn't believe in Oregon. I still have that going for me as my offseason picks. For the second week in road, Oregon struggled but they ultimately prevailed.
They got a 25 yard field goal as time expired to give them that 37 34 victory. Dylan Gabriel approved for 244, 4 yards of two touchdowns who yeah, they, I think they trailed until very, again, until the very end of the game. Ashton Ney continued. His Heisman run at 192 yards and pre touchdown for Boise State.
Who came into the game 18. 5 for the underdogs, so they nearly pulled a big upset here. Jordan, what do you think about Oregon beating Boise State? Indeed, is Boise State some of the shit? I guess as a playoff committee, I would hope that they don't hold this against Boise State because they went to Oregon, played them tough.
I hope that doesn't count against them.
Jordan Schultz: I think this game, I don't know what it is. I feel like it all comes down to, is it because it's not a conference game and they're just going through the motions? I don't know. And it doesn't matter and it's the only difference in these other schools that we're seeing, Ohio State and Georgia and, Alabama, and they're playing slow in the beginning but then blowing another team out at the end.
Maybe, I don't know, is it that? But Austin Jonti looks great I think me and Tony were talking, um, just about this year, it might not even be the year for quarterbacks for Heisman. You might see a couple running backs receivers in there and Austin Jaunty, if he continues, he did just, he put up 192 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns against a Oregon team that's supposed to have a decent defense.
Dale and Gabriel looked alright, Oregon looked like a mess. They had 2 fumbles, their defense couldn't really stop the run, so it's a big question mark for me, I know I picked Oregon to win it all this year, it's a big question mark for me. Still, but like I said, it's still week two. They haven't, is it because it's only week two and they're like, we haven't put it, it's not conference, who cares?
Or is there something else going on? Cause clearly they can put up the numbers stat wise, but is it, they're just not finishing drives, things like that. And they need to work on it. There's a lot of things that could be addressed in this game, but it's hard to tell. Like I said, Now with this college football playoff, if you don't win your conference, does it really matter?
We'll see. Jess, what do you think?
Jess Sabin: Oregon needs to button up. They, despite the wins, and I still have faith in them, but they were, they lost two fumbles, so they lost the turnover battle. They had three more penalties for 24 more yards. They had a total of nine penalties for 74 yards. They were just 4 of 12 on 3rd down.
Against what, Boise State is. Clearly looking like one of the best. Non power conference teams in the country but they shouldn't be losing third down efficiency to them. This game shouldn't have been that close but Oregon, they need to button these things up when they start playing the other you're not going to be able to get away with this against Ohio State.
I don't care what you think about Will Howard, Ohio State is one of the most talented, if not the most talented teams in the entire country. If they really want to punch their ticket and, to the college football playoff, if they want to be in the Big Ten Championship, if they want one of those buys they just they can't have these kinds of performances because I don't even know if they're going to be able to get away with something like that against who else is on their schedule.
Forget Ohio State. If they play like that, I don't think they're going to be able to get past a, Oregon State. If they play like that against Michigan, it's at Michigan, and you think, if Michigan is able to just figure their stuff out by that point in the season, again, you just, like Jordan said, you can't afford these kinds of losses, these kinds of performances, when you get to conference play, and that's coming up real soon.
But all in all, they got the win, they haven't lost yet, and despite that, they've still dropped how many spots in the ranking? Six total spots, they're down to nine in this one. They're down to nine in this week's eight people.
Tony Kihl: Yeah
Jess Sabin: they dropped an additional two spots and they won that they're undefeated and they've continued to drop So I have faith that they're gonna button up.
I like the coaches there. I like the roster. I like the talent It is concerning but i'm not out on oregon just yet But if they continue to play like this, they're gonna lose games. They shouldn't lose
Jordan Schultz: My the biggest thing for oregon is hopefully they button up their next game's Oregon State at Oregon State and it's always, it's a rival, huge rival game.
So if that, I don't know, that's a, it's going to be a tough one.
Tony Kihl: All right, let's move to a new segment guys. Let's buy or sell some playoff contenders based on this week's performances. So I want you to give me 30 seconds or less on if this is, if the team I'm going to mention to you, are you buying or selling their chances to make the playoff and be a contender.
To get there. So we'll start first. Oklahoma State they won 39 to 31 of Arkansas, even though Arkansas had 800 yards of total offense, was just clicking on offense, but they found a way to win. They grinded a game out. And Oklahoma State stadium. Jordan by or so, Oklahoma State, sorry, as I'm going through puberty here, I guess, buy or sell Oklahoma State.
Go play off protection.
Jordan Schultz: I'm selling them 648 total yards. They did the time of session was Arkansas the whole game. I think Arkansas just made minor mistakes. They should have won that game. So I'm selling Oklahoma State just because they don't have a defense. Jess.
Jess Sabin: Yeah, I agree. They gave up 11 of 19 on third down.
They got lucky in that the Arkansas was 0 for 2 on fourth down. But Arkansas had. 13 more minutes of time in possession. This seems more about Arkansas losing the game than Oklahoma State winning.
Tony Kihl: Yeah.
Jess Sabin: I'm selling on Oklahoma State.
Tony Kihl: I agree. Get him out of here. Sell him. Alright, Kansas State up next.
They had to come back from behind to beat Tulane 34 27. I think there was actually a missed call when it gets to Tulane here. They probably cost them the tie here as well. Jess, we'll start with you. Biner selling Kansas State.
Jess Sabin: I wasn't too high on Kansas State to begin with but I don't think I'm going to sell just yet.
I still think they're one of the better teams in their conference. Got it done. They barely scraped it out, but I don't think I'm buying. I'm not selling. My opinion on them did not change. I had Tulane winning the game, but I was impressed by Kansas State's resilience and ability to stay in, come back and get the win.
Jordan Schultz: I'm selling again. This is another one is Oklahoma state no defense and Tulane lost this game, a fumbled return for a touchdown, which brought Kansas or Kansas state to 34. So I'm still in Kansas state, no defense. Tulane lost this game, not Kansas state winning.
Tony Kihl: Yeah. I holding them right now. I want to see what they do next couple of weeks.
Maybe this is if they get the offense going there, but yeah, I'm a little worried about Avery Johnson is the quarterback there. We'll see what happens. All right. Penn state. They were losing most of this game to Bowling Green. They were able to pull this one out 34 to 27. So Jordan, start with you here, sir.
Are you buying or selling Penn state?
Jordan Schultz: I'm staying neutral at Penn State. This is, it's the same thing as. The other teams I said earlier about Oregon. Is it just because it's not a conference game? Does it, no game matters anymore unless it's a conference game. If you think you can win the conference.
So I'm going to keep it neutral. I think it's the bigger conferences. Penn State won it. I'm going to keep Penn State neutral with this one. All right, Jess.
Jess Sabin: I'm neutral. I think there's, I like the talent on the team. I think Drew Allard has improved as a quarterback. He wasn't great this game, but he wasn't bad.
They got, Nick Singleton was a huge factor. I don't want to say Nick Singleton kind of bailed him out, but he was able to have a heck of a performance on just 13 carries for 119 yards. But I think Penn State's going to show that they're once again, and now instead of it being Ohio State, Michigan as the two teams, they're just not good enough to beat.
I think that assuming Oregon gets its act together, it, they're still going to be in that like third or fourth team. In the conference not quite good enough, but I'm not selling I'm not buying
Tony Kihl: Yeah, I sold them earlier in the season so they're still sold and whoever bought them is going off with them bought it
Jess Sabin: back just to sell it again.
Tony Kihl: That's right. I bought it back. Just get even more money for selling them again all right, let's move on to utah They won 23 to 12 over baylor cam rising exited his game with a finger injury Obviously injuries have been plagued him the last few years Obviously at least it's not his knee that he hurt before but it was a finger and they still won Close to double digits here.
So jess, what do you buy or sell in utah?
Jess Sabin: I'm selling, I just, it's more about Cam Rising and his injury history more than anything else. I just don't know if I can trust Utah down the line if Cam Rising isn't there. And did I don't know if you guys saw if it was his throwing hand or not, because especially if it's his throwing hand, then I'm just out.
I, you need the quarterback healthy. Jordan. I'm staying neutral because I already have them winning the Big 12. So I can't really I can't sell or buy that. They even with Cam Rising getting hurt this game, they have Utah State next week. That should be easy game no matter who the quarterback is.
Jordan Schultz: Their defense played well. They're just team all around played well. They're really resilient. Even when Cam Rising get hurt, backup comes in, team still plays solid. So I'm gonna keep neutral with Utah. They're winning the Big 12 still.
Tony Kihl: All right. Next up we have Alabama who had a fight for three quarters of South Florida.
I think to Ashley, where they were winning by two, losing by I can't remember what they were going into the fourth quarter, but it was it was pretty close. And it was on the night they did, dedicated the stadium to Nick Saban. So what a night that, almost lose to South Florida. So with that being said Jordan, we'll start with you here.
Are you buying or selling Alabama?
Jordan Schultz: I am going to, I'm going to sell them, man, I just can't, they're not going to get away with that against better teams and being so close and they put up I think 28 points in the fourth quarter. Good teams are not going to let them do that and if you cannot score throughout the whole game, especially against a team like, South Florida, which honestly this is the second.
Year in a, is it? No, south Florida
Tony Kihl: gave 'em a fight, right? Yeah.
Jordan Schultz: Yeah. So I'm gonna sell 'em. I think better teams in the SEC right now are going to be able to put up points against them and hold them to not be able to score in the fourth quarter. Only
Tony Kihl: Jess
Jess Sabin: yeah, they were up by one going into the fourth quarter, I think it was 14, 13.
And then it was 2116 before Alabama had that massive run to just completely put it outta reach. I'm not selling, I'm not buying, I'm staying neutral. I think they're still gonna be like the third best team, fourth at worst in the SEC. This has been a really weird start to the year for a lot of teams.
Ohio State got off slow. We see, we just talked about Oregon. Seems like all these top teams, if your name isn't, or if your name isn't Georgia or Texas, are having like these weird performances. But I think Alabama's gonna be fine, I just don't think they're gonna be that top level team like they have been in the past.
Tony Kihl: Yeah, I tend to agree. I think they'll be fine, but will fine be enough to make a noise. To be seen but I think part of the reason I'd also like
Jess Sabin: to point out that Alabama fine is still
Tony Kihl: different than 99 Of teams, right? Sure. They have enough talent to tell their way for a lot of these games as well So that'll be helpful all right, let's move on to lsu.
They were having a again a bit of a struggle as well through two and a half quarters they end up beating nicholas 44 21 So again a little sluggish performance by lsu after Losing that game to USC, are you buying or selling LSU's chances here, Jess?
Jess Sabin: I think I'm selling just because I think that loss to USC and that performance, had they beaten USC, I would be fine with them.
But in terms of selling, what I think, if they're going to be able to make the playoff or anything, I think I'm selling. They're clearly not as good. As I had thought I mean I didn't have them making the playoff. I'm like 95 percent sure about that but I think they're going to be In the top of the middle of the sec, especially if tennessee's as good as they've looked so far That's just another team that I think between schedule and performance is just going to be ahead of them I think lsu is going to be a good team, but I think they're standing in the sec.
I just You I think by the end of the year, they're not even going to be ranked.
Tony Kihl: Alright, Jordan.
Jordan Schultz: I'm going to sell them as well. They can't run the ball. They only have 64 rushing yards between 5 people. And it was, I feel like, Garrett Nussmeyer, That
Tony Kihl: is un good. Yeah, the most rushing yards that, I will say.
Most
Jordan Schultz: rushing yards was 19 by Josh Williams.
Tony Kihl: They did lose their, to be fair to them, they did lose their starting running back, I think, before this game to an ACL, so
Jess Sabin: Still, they have the two, they have the two of the top three tackles in all of football. I think the only other tackle that is like unanimously ahead of either of them is Calvin Banks out of Texas.
Tony Kihl: Yeah. You should be able to run the ball. I guess you should be able to run. You gotta scheme up something and get you 15, 20 yards somewhere, I don't know. Yeah, no, maybe they just stayed off the gas a little bit, you never know.
Jordan Schultz: But Garrett Nussmeyer did have six touchdown passes. Yeah, just want out there.
There you
Tony Kihl: go. You just don't have to do it every week, I think. All right. Oklahoma final, the final one on this buy or sell list is Oklahoma. They had a tight fought victory, 16 to 12 word Houston. I did call it, I think the quarterback of Oklahoma reminds me of a lot of Cade Clubnick. They came from very similar areas in Austin.
Spens is not right. They just, the office doesn't feel right to me. I'm. I'm selling Oklahoma here. What are you guys doing here? We'll start with you. Jordan. What are you selling or buying or selling in Oklahoma?
Jordan Schultz: I sold them all before the season started.
Jackson Arnold does not look good. 19 for thirty two, a hundred seventy four yards, two touchdowns in one interception. Passing game doesn't look good.
Tony Kihl: Quarterbacks in general game, can we just talk about how bad quarterbacks in general for all of week two or week one and week two are, there's just no great performances.
Hey, k Clubnick
Jordan Schultz: put up number.
Tony Kihl: It's ab
Jordan Schultz: Appalachian
Tony Kihl: state.
Jordan Schultz: Okay. So I'm just saying he put up numbers, but Oh, Oklahoma did not put up numbers. And honestly they should have lost, they should have lost this game. Yeah, hu Houston should have won this game, but honestly it's not here or there. I'm selling Oklahoma to Jess.
If he wants to buy it,
Jess Sabin: I'm not gonna buy it. Damn. I don't have anything to sell. I was never bought in on Oklahoma to begin with. I thought they were going to be another team. I think they're going to be in a similar tier as LSU, where they're probably because of a difficulty of schedule.
Let me just pull up their schedule
Jordan Schultz: real
Jess Sabin: quick. I
Jordan Schultz: they play Houston. That's not difficult. That shouldn't have been a good for the game.
Jess Sabin: Yeah, but they have Tennessee. They have a Texas. They have Ole Miss. They have Alabama. They have Missouri. They have LSU. I think by the end of the year, they're going to be like a four, maybe even five loss team.
They're going to get in. Okay ish bowl and it's gonna be like oh, it was a really tough season for them You know, and it was a really rough first year in the sec and that's what it's gonna be I never had any stock in them so I can't sell it and i'm not buying yours
All
Tony Kihl: Nope, I don't want anything to do with this I never picked them so I can't Defense hey, they 12 points for Houston.
That's I guess that's Also defense
Jordan Schultz: for Houston
Tony Kihl: held
Jordan Schultz: them to
Tony Kihl: 16 points. Oh, that's that defense of Houston or just the offense of Oklahoma. This we'll see. All so we're down for week three predictions now. So I need for these predictions because I need 30 seconds, the quick answer of who's winning and why, and then keep moving here.
We'll start with Arizona at Kansas state open it up. If it can stay open, but eight and a half point favorites here. So obviously we talked a little bit about Kansas state already. Arizona. I showed a little bit of versatility in their first two games. They put on a clinic week one, tossing 422 yards, four touchdowns by Fieta there.
But then in last week, he was a they got held down. So they went to the running game. So they got able to pass it and run it. So you got to like that Arizona, but they did, have a little bit of challenge from Northern Arizona last week as well. So interesting, both of these guys played up and down to competition so far.
With that being said, I'll start with you, Jordan, Arizona, I have Kansas State just cause it's at home. I think last week they're the same team. They played, Arizona played Northern Arizona and barely won that game. Kansas State played a better team in Tulane and pulled it out. So I got Kansas State covering that spread.
Jordan Schultz: I just think it's at home. They have a little bit more talent. And just all, Kansas State. Jess,
Jess Sabin: what do you got? I like Arizona. Kansas State, as we talked about, has Some deficiencies and on the defensive side of the ball, and I just trust Arizona to be able to adapt a bit better.
Fta, what is it? fta, fifa. fta the quarterback for Arizona, I like him and the wide receiver who I had as my non qb whatchamacallit, non QB Heisman guy. A Heisman pick. God, that's another name. I'm not even gonna try to pronounce it. Either way, he's the number, he's projected as the number one receiver in this upcoming draft.
I like their connection, I think they're gonna put up yards, I think they're gonna score some points, and I don't trust Kansas State's defense.
Tony Kihl: Alright, give me cats at home. I just think they'll find a way to win this game at home. Are we
Jess Sabin: writing down who's picking what? Only if I get it right.
Tony Kihl: If I don't, then I'll forget about it.
Jess Sabin: Tommy, we talked
Tony Kihl: about this, but now that you've
Jess Sabin: started getting a
Tony Kihl: ton wrong, now we're not hearing you. A ton wrong? What are you talking about? Who wants to really keep up with this? Alright, because I've gotten more right than you. I don't
Jordan Schultz: think so. Do you have it written
Tony Kihl: down?
Jordan Schultz: Do
Tony Kihl: you have it written down?
If it's not written down, we don't know. No, we
don't know. We don't know. If you go before pre season predictions of some of these teams, I would say, it might even itself out a little bit. I did call Syracuse a dark horse, just throwing it out there.
Jess Sabin: No, you did have that, I believe. I have
Tony Kihl: my one, I guess my one guy in the light this year is Syracuse, they're gonna lose the next five games, cause Tony, I know, I'm not gonna die because I said something. Alright. Alabama, Wisconsin. Both teams coming in 2 0. We talked about Alabama already. Wisconsin beat Midwestern Michigan I think in week 1, 2014. And then they had another sluggish performance against South Dakota when they won 27 13.
I would say Tyler Van Dyke, the quarterback there, has looked okay. Not great, not bad, but it's okay. And then, obviously we're talking about Alabama coming up with a little bit of a struggle. We'll So, Jess, starting with you, who do you got? Alabama and Wisconsin? This is at Wisconsin.
Jess Sabin: I'm still taking Alabama.
I think they're going to talent their way out of this one. Like we said earlier, I think Alabama is going to prove to be one of the top teams in the SEC, but not just, but not quite in that top tier with Georgia and Texas. They have been in years past. Not that Texas has been in the SEC in years past, but you know what I'm saying.
I think they're going to talent their way out of this one, and I think they're going to win this game, probably semi comfortably.
Tony Kihl: Alright, Jordan.
Jordan Schultz: I have Alabama, also. Honestly, just said everything. They're just going to talent them out. I think, I'm just, one guy to look at, Ryan Williams, he has six receptions for 207 yards.
He had two catches week one for 139 yards, and two touchdowns. Watch him put up numbers. 17 years old. Yeah, young, fast all the things that Wisconsin I don't think have ever had in their whole existence. Hey, Russell Wilson was there one time, okay? Sure. Give me Alabama it's gonna be a, I think they're just gonna be able to bully their way out through this one.
Alright, McAfee,
Jess Sabin: give me Alabama!
Jordan Schultz: Alright
Tony Kihl: relax over here. Don't be like, Brian Kelly, Breaking Tables. Alright, I'll go ahead and pick Alabama as well. I think they'll out talent. I think it could be a little closer. It could be ugly until we get to the third quarter and Alabama pulls away with the talent.
That's what I think on that one. We'll talk about LSU South Carolina. I added this one because this is interesting. I wouldn't have thought this was going to be a good game going into it, but South Carolina just dominated Kentucky, what, like 31 6 last week. Their defense looked really good, their offense played pretty well and they just, I thought highly of Kentucky coming into this year, and they just really dominated them, and LSU just has to look like a world beater quickly, Jess, who you got? LSU, South Carolina.
Jess Sabin: I'm going with LSU. Neither of Kentucky's quarterbacks are very good and I would know one of them was Rutgers quarterback last year, Gavin Wimsatt, he's a very, he's so talented, but he just, he has accuracy issues.
And I just, LSU should be able to, at the very least, out talent their way through this one. I know South Carolina had a great game against Kentucky. LSU isn't Kentucky. I think LSU wins this one.
Tony Kihl: Jordan, who you got?
Jordan Schultz: I have LSU as well.
Tony Kihl: It's at South Carolina, by the way, guys. I dunno if that changed your,
Jordan Schultz: that doesn't change.
I thought it changed my thing as well last week with NC State, but it didn't.
Tony Kihl: It was a little different. Now they have a pretty, pretty robust crowd there. That's I
Jordan Schultz: just think LSU is gonna be able to put up numbers and I think Syracuse or not suse, , South Carolina is not gonna be able to put up numbers.
They almost lost the Old Dominion Week one. I got LSU'd to out talent South Carolina, just like Alabama.
Tony Kihl: I really want to take South Carolina this one, but I'm going to go ahead and pick LSU and Jinx them. Hopefully I lose. Brian Kelly, you deserve it. You put us in this situation. All right, let's move on to Boston College at Missouri.
Both are coming in undefeated. Both have some pretty decent wins. I think Missouri has held both their opponents to zero points the first two weeks. So defense wise, they're looking good. Offense, they're looking good. Boston College actually, beat the crap out of Florida State. So they're looking pretty good with their quarterback and running back combination.
I'll start with you, Jordan. Who you got here? Boston College or Missouri? I got Missouri.
Jordan Schultz: I think they It's going to be another SEC talent over everything. It's at home. Missouri's defense actually looks good this year. And their offense is rolling like they, never stopped rolling from last year.
So give me Missouri. I think they're going to cover the spread. I think it's 16 and a half. I got Missouri, I think, just at home. SEC school undefeated so far. Ranked high. That stadium is going to be buzzing. Missouri. Yes.
Jess Sabin: I got Missouri. Boston College is somehow ranked 24th. They're really riding high on that Florida State win.
But, neither team that they've beaten has won a game yet. So Hardly,
Tony Kihl: because they beat them.
Jess Sabin: So
Tony Kihl: Get the polls! Take it back, Jess.
Jess Sabin: I'm not taking that back. I'm not taking that back. But Missouri is going to win this game and I think they're going to win this game very comfortably.
Tony Kihl: Yeah, I got Missouri.
Missouri's offense is going to be too much and their defense is playing well. I think they'll be able to stop that running attack of Boston College, which won against Florida State. Give us Missouri here. Oregon State obviously Oregon's had two tough matchups. Idaho and Oregon State side they started off against Idaho State and they won 38 15 and then they ended up winning the game what, 21 0, I think, of the game after that against San Diego State.
Looked pretty good obviously to have it played, I would say. Either one of them played great competition, so I don't know how much you can glean from either one of these guys. But, who are you picking, Oregon or Oregon State? This is at Oregon State.
Jess Sabin: I'm still going with Oregon. Until they actually lose, I'm not gonna be picking against them. They're still the much more talented team. Again, they've got some things that they need to button up. I have faith that they will. The fact that this is at Oregon State does give me some pause with how Oregon has looked, but I think at the end of the day, in college football, talent does make much more of a difference than it does in the NFL.
Give me Oregon.
Jordan Schultz: I got Oregon as well. I think the talent on Oregon's offense is just going to be able to outplay Oregon State. It's going to be a lot, it's going to be close, it's going to be as close as every other Oregon game this year. But I just think Oregon has found a way the last two games to win it, and I think they're going to do it again.
Tony Kihl: Alright, I gotta, since you guys are not picking any upsets, I guess I'll go on a limb here. I'm going to pick an upset next game. Okay this is at Oregon State. If it was at Oregon State, I wouldn't do this, but I think Oregon State's going to shock Oregon and win this game. A little rivalry game to throw in there after a couple tough games.
I know they're probably not going to happen and I picked them, but I do feel like Oregon State has enough on their side of the ball to score and play enough good defense to win this game. And I think they want to prove something, that they're not left behind from the power forward. They're going to be really motivated to win this game, so give me Oregon State here.
Next up, final game of the week. Tulane at Oklahoma, so obviously we talked about Tulane Just barely getting by Kansas State on Saturday losing by seven points Or just barely losing by seven points to Kansas State's Behind their talented young quarterback. So Masai has been really good, but he was obviously had that fumble that cost him the game I probably wants to prove that was a fluke and then the other hand you have Oklahoma coming off their win that we Houston so really I Both teams are probably have some bad taste in their mouth.
They want to get it out. Jess, who do you got winning this one? Tulane or Oklahoma?
Jess Sabin: I, if this game was at Tulane, I would be confidently picking Tulane, but instead I think I'm going to hesitantly pick Tulane. I think Oklahoma showed that they had a lot of issues over the first two weeks, and I don't know that they're gonna be able to get over that this week. I just, I don't like the quarterback.
I. They got some stuff to work out there in Oklahoma. I think Tulane comes in, gives them a very rude kind of wake up call, as it were.
Jordan Schultz: Jordan. I'm with ya. Jess on that one. I got Tulane again. I just don't think the offense of Oklahoma can, I don't know what it is, they just can't compete. They can't put up numbers.
Tulane can put up numbers, showed it already against Kansas State. If the defense can button up. On Tulane, I think they're going to be able to hold Oklahoma back. And Tulane has shown it this season already and the last couple of seasons. So give me Tulane just cause that offense is better than Oklahoma's.
Tony Kihl: I'm not going on a limb anymore on this today So I'm picking Oklahoma to the win because it's at home the defense. I think we'll show up They're probably it's probably a tight game just because I don't think their offense is quite there yet But I think that defense will shut down to Lane and they'll find a way to win this game at home To give me Oklahoma in this one.
So with that wraps up all of our games for this week guys Again, Not a lot of great performances, but usually, game matchups, but usually when that happens, there's a lot of crazy upsets or crazy things that happen. So I'm interested to see what happens next week. So until then, we'll talk to you guys soon.
Reach out to us on X in the flat pod and we'll see you soon. Bye.
